Style Wednesday
There’s a lot more to style today than the two-piece suit, and this week on Style Wednesday we take a look at nine demonstrations of what the power of a few “well chosen — and well cut” — jackets/pants can do. Jackets and pants that can be worn in different combinations.(i.e., not suits. Learn it, live it.)

On Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, 41, actor: Two-button wool-and-mohair jacket ($1,750) by Gucci; cotton shirt ($325) and wool tie ($185) by Ermenegildo Zegna; cotton-wool-and-silk trousers ($195) by Joseph Abboud; leather shoes ($650) by Santoni; steel Speedmaster Olympic Collection Timeless watch ($3,300) by Omega.
Since you won’t have a suit tying the whole look together, keep your shirt, tie, and pocket square in the same color family.

On Dean Winters, 46, actor: Two-button wool jacket ($1,860) by Louis Vuitton; cotton shirt ($125) and silk tie ($95) by Boss Black; silk pocket square ($80) by Thomas Pink.
Even with lightly textured jackets, like this mélange, always ensure your pants are smoother in texture.

On Tirian Harvey, 33, artist: Two-button wool jacket ($1,695) and cotton shirt ($495) by Giorgio Armani; silk tie ($195) by Louis Vuitton; cotton pocket square ($65) by Cesare Attolini; silver cuff links ($220) by Bulgari; glasses ($255) by Paul Smith.
The jacket always outranks pants, shirt, and tie; the busier the pattern, the plainer the rest of your outfit should be.

On Coster-Waldau: Two-button linen-silk-and-wool jacket ($1,295), cotton shirt ($145), and wool trousers ($350) by Polo Ralph Lauren; silk tie ($195) by Brioni; leather shoes ($485) by Bruno Magli; cotton socks ($30) by Falke.
You can wear a wool blazer all year-round; a good linen blazer, especially in a dark shade, is ideal for warm-weather office wear…

On Simon James Lee, 36, creative director: Two-button cotton-and-linen jacket ($400) by Banana Republic; cotton shirt ($450) by Ralph Lauren Purple Label; silk tie ($195) by Dolce & Gabbana; steel day/date watch ($165) by Seiko; linen pocket square ($60 for three) by Brooks Brothers.
…But if you’re sticking with wool, make sure it’s light enough for warmer weather.

On Jai Lennard, 26, photographer: Wool coat ($1,265) by Dries Van Noten; two-button wool jacket ($2,150), cotton shirt ($295), silk tie ($195), and wool trousers ($495) by Dolce & Gabbana; leather shoes ($1,560) by John Lobb.
Sometimes if you’re canny, the jacket of a bold patterned suit — say, in a strong windowpane — works as well with unmatched pants as it does in the suit.

On Todd Womack, 35, comedian, writer: Two-button wool-and-silk jacket (part of suit, $1,395) by Boss Selection; cotton shirt ($145) by Boss Black; silk tie ($195) by Brioni; rose-gold Heritage Flagship watch ($4,000) by Longines; cotton pocket square ($90) by Zilli.
Unless you’re attending a funeral, break up a basic gray-and-navy combination with a sober pattern.

On Dao-Yi Chow, 37, fashion designer for Public School NYC: Two-button wool-and-mohair jacket ($1,320), cotton shirt ($385), and wool trousers ($595) by Prada; silk tie ($185) by Ralph Lauren Purple Label; steel Colt automatic watch ($2,545) by Breitling; silk pocket square ($90) by Brioni.
From microchecks to bolder plaids, every man should own at least one sensibly patterned sport coat.

On Harvey: Cotton trench coat ($2,195) by Burberry Prorsum; two-button silk-and-wool jacket ($360) by Tommy Hilfiger; cotton shirt ($395) by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture; silk tie ($195) by Brioni; wool trousers ($695) by Gucci; steel Carrera Calibre 6 watch ($2,300) by TAG Heuer.
