This past Tuesday in San Francisco Jimi Hendrix Winterland Day.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors just proclaimed Sept. 13, 2011, to be Jimi Hendrix Winterland Day in honor of six concerts Hendrix performed at S.F.’s historic (and now long gone) Winterland Ballroom in October 1968.The supervisors decided to recognize the guitar god in honor of a four-disc box set calledJimi Hendrix Experience Winterland that will be released on that day. To celebrate,Amoeba Music will be hosting a party with Hendrix’s sister, Janie, and legendary bassist and Hendrix fan Bootsy Collins. Collins will be signing copies of his new album, The Funk Capital of the World, and Amoeba will screen rare video clips of Hendrix. But just consider this: You live in a city that approved and issued an official document that began, “WHEREAS, Jimi Hendrix is renowned for his musical innovation, which revolutionized traditional thinking about rock and roll…”

JIMI HENDRIX - 3 Nights At Winterland. 6 x CD Box Set

Some music critics claim that Jimi Hendrix was at his creative peak during 1968. It was a very hectic year for him and The Experience. The all-important second album Axis:Bold As Love had been released in the UK in December the previous year and their hard-nosed business manager, Mike Jeffery, wanted to capitalise on Jimi’s new-found success in the States.  It was ironic that Jimi, an American, had to be discovered in New York by Chas Chandler, an Englishman, and be taken to London in order to become an overnight success in both Britain and Europe. His incendiary performance at the Monterey Festival in June 1967 (on Paul McCartney’s recommendation) had launched his career like a rocket in his home country.

Happy Birthday Jimi Hendrix

The one and only James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix{originally named Johnny Allen Hendrix by his mother then later changed by his father AL Hendrix to honor his brother who died in World War II} (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is often considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators in the industry,     and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era across a range of genres.  After initial success in Europe, he achieved fame in the United States following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. Hendrix often favored raw over driven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback.
